Mothers Tokyo Stock Exchange is one of Tokyo Stock Exchange’s markets where the shares of startup companies are listed and traded. While large and mid-size companies are mainly listed on the first and second sections of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Mothers Tokyo Stock Exchange requires its applicants to demonstrate high growth potential, rather than company history and profitability. Many startup companies in Japan aim to be listed on Mothers Tokyo Stock Exchange and consider this as a proof of success. Therefore, companies listed on Mothers tend to proudly feature the fact prominently in their job vacancy postings and on the career pages on their websites. As of the end of January 2019, 276 startup companies are currently listed on Mothers.
