Immigration Services Agency is an external bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan. This agency controls the administrative affairs of foreigners such as immigration control, foreign acceptance, recognition and authorization of residence status and refugee status. The Immigration Bureau of Japan used to be an internal department of the Ministry of Justice, managing these operations. However, with the policy of increasing acceptance of foreign workers in effect, these operations have been managed by the Immigration Services Agency since April 4, 2019. Besides the Immigration Services Agency that works as an external bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan, 8 regional immigration control offices, 7 branch offices, 61 local offices and 2 immigration control centers are also established.
