UNIQLO owner plans 20% increase in starting salary to strengthen global recruitment

Fast Retailing, a clothing retail company that owns UNIQLO and GU, is about to increase the starting salary for workers by 20 % in order to strengthen the company’s global recruitment.

The increase is aimed for the “Global Leader Employees,” staff who have the potential for excellent performance in international business. Fast Retailing will increase the starting salary from 210,000 to 255,000 yen for the Global Leader Employees starting Spring 2020.

In recent years, UNIQLO has been expanding its business mainly in Southeast Asian countries. In September 2016, it opened a store in Orchard Central Mall in Singapore, and it opened a flagship store in Makati city in Manila, the Philippines in October 2018. Additionally, they plan to open their first store in Delhi, India in Fall 2019.

This salary increase for their first-year employees would act as an effective strategy to attract young global employees to be recruited to lead the business expansion.
