Immigration Services Agency decided to extend 6 months status of residence for technical intern trainees and Specified skilled worker

Immigration Services Agency has decided to extend status of residence for up to 6 months for technical intern trainees and Specified skilled workers who were dismissed and can’t go back to their home country.

On April 17. 2020, the agency announced exceptional measure, which technical intern trainees and Specified skilled workers who were dismissed due to the effect of COVID-19 can change their status of residence to “Designated Activities”. By changing status of residence, they will be able to work in Japan for up to a year, therefore it’s possible to find another job.

However, some people couldn’t find another job or technical intern after a year stay, also they are still unable to go back to their home country. For this reason, the agency has decided to extend status of residence “Designated Activities” for up to 6 months.

Due to the COVID-19, it’s still a difficult moment for foreigners working in japan. Some of them feel lonely because they can’t return to their home country and meet their family. Support measures are necessary for those of people.
